epigenetika

Epigenetika je v moderním slova smyslu vědní podobor genetiky, který studuje změny v genové expresi (a tedy obvykle i ve fenotypu), které nejsou způsobeny změnou nukleotidové sekvence DNA.

Jde o výjimku z obecného pravidla, že dědičné fenotypické změny jsou způsobeny změnami v genech. Také epigenetické jevy mohou být děděny z buňky na buňku a z generace na generaci, tedy jak při mitóze, tak při meióze. Genom včetně epigenetických změn se označuje jako epigenom.

In biology, and specifically genetics, epigenetics is the study of heritable changes in gene expression or cellular phenotype caused by mechanisms other than changes in the underlying DNA sequence. It refers to functionally relevant modifications to the genome that do not involve a change in the nucleotide sequence.

Examples of such modifications are DNA methylation and histone modification. These changes may remain through cell divisions for the remainder of the cells life and may also last for multiple generations. However, there is no change in the underlying DNA sequence of the organism; instead, non-genetic factors cause the organism's genes to behave differently.
