Until the late 1980s, sphingolipids were believed to represent structural components of the plasma membrane, whose function was to provide a protective barrier to the cell. Sphingolipids are now recognized signals for fundamental cellular processes, such as proliferation, survival, cell death, adhesion, migration, angiogenesis, and embryogenesis. The explosion of our knowledge on sphingolipids facilitated the transfer of these insights into basic biological functions of sphingolipids to their biochemistry, cell biology, pharmacology and, finally, treatment of human diseases by targeting sphingolipids.
The aim of this workshop is to connect basic science with pre-clinical models, clinical applications and studies and industry-development of novel drugs. Since sphingolipids are becoming a major target in various very important diseases, in particular autoimmune, infectious, pulmonary, cardiovascular and tumor diseases, it is very important to connect basic scientists with clinicians and applied scientists in the field, to re-shape drug development and the planning of pre cilinical and clinical studies and to promote the transfer of basic science into clinical projects.
