| Description: | The gene bank (GB) assures maintenance of all seed-propagated plant genetic resources and their exchange with similar institutions abroad. Capacity of the gene bank storage facilities reaches 100 000 samples. Seed samples are stored under two different temperature regimes -18°C for base collection and -5°C for active collection. All accessions are kept in the active collection and selected the most valuable accessions also in the base collection. The base collection is kept as a long term reserve for the future and active collection is used for seed distribution to users. Seed samples and relevant information are distributed according to requests for purposes of research, breeding and education. Group of documentation carries out central documentation of Czech plant genetic resources (PGR) collections and it is responsible for development of the national PGR catalogue and user programme EVIGEZ, for management of the ECP/GR European Wheat Database (EWDB) and offers hosting possibility to other databases (Wheat pedigree and alleles on-line , ECP/GR Arrhenatherum and Trisetum). In addition to classical gene bank activities as documentation, maintenance and exchange of PGR, the Gene Bank research workers evaluate collections of wheat, triticale, winter barley, buckwheat, millet, Amaranthus, sorghum and quinoa. The Gene Bank is responsible for maintenance of beet, sunflower, maize and tobacco collections as well. For large PGR collections (wheat etc.) rationalisation measurements as ‘core’ collections are developed and practiced. |
