Desription:
A Scottish SME, with support from 2 Scottish universities, has designed and is developing a prototype pyrolysis reactor for dealing with biomass and which results in the production of high grade activated carbon, together with the provision of thermal energy and gas for CHP (Combined Heat and Power).
This multiple output significantly improves the financial potential of any renewable energy project using the equipment.
The company's market niche is their ability to deploy modular, small to medium scale (10 to 50 tonne/ biomass/day input) cost effective reactors either as a stand alone pyrolysis system as a production method for biochar and activated Carbon as a system producing thermal and/or electrical energy for use in an allied process (for example steel processing) or as the core in a CHP system capable of delivering simultaneous multiple profit streams.
Innovative Aspects:
This Fast Pyrolysis Reactor has significant market advantages over current biomass boilers, in that the pyrolysis process not only generates usable heat but also produces Carbon for which there is a ready market.
This significantly alters the cost/benefit in analysing biomass technology and has the potential to make the introduction of biomass for heating and/or power generation an attractive option for business.
In the commitment to reduce landfill the Fast Pyrolysis Reactor can, subject to adjustment be deployed in the generation of CHP from Municipal Solid Waste (MSW), with the waste ash volume for disposal to landfill reduced to <3% of the original MSW volume.
Comments:
- Requested Cooperation: License Agreement, Joint further development, Testing of new applications, Joint Venture Agreement
The company is now seeking a suitable partner and site where the installation of the first commercial unit can demonstrate the Fast Pyrolysis technology, the potential for integration into a CHP system and the manufacture of various grades of biochar and Activated Carbon, thus facilitating the taking of a refined technology to market.
- Significant technical support and assistance in the evolution of the technology continues to be provided by sector specialists from two Scottish universities.
- The company will consider technical cooperation, JV and license agreements.
