Desription:
NE England based SME, specialist in 3D imaging software, has developed prototype 3D motion capture system suitable for gait analysis and related biomechanical problems.

The solution incorporates a Windows PC application using novel 3D depth camera technology; as such the hardware footprint is relatively inexpensive. The application will monitor treadmill based movement, allowing the user to interactively query aspects of the gait from the Windows PC based interface. There is potential to deliver 3D gait analysis into the daily healthcare system at an affordable price, with opportunities in sports and leisure. The developers have extensive experience in specialist image retrieval and software / systems development.

Innovative Aspects:
The system calibrates two individual 3D cameras to produce a single 3D output accurate to within 2 to 3mm. Real time data from each camera is displayed on screen and the output retained for off-line analysis; the data is used to produce an interactive 3D model containing a record of the subject's sequence of motion. Video gait analysis equipment is currently used by podiatrists and sports injury practitioners; however this is only 2D motion capture and the use of a single camera restricts analysis output to one leg at a time. Specialist Gait Analysis Labs now offer 3D motion capture, but equipment is very expensive restricting throughput. System costs would be comparable to current 2D video gait analysis systems and the ease of use would de-skill the process and make the service more widely available.
