Description:
The client estimates the potential production of 20-30.000 tons/year of sodium sulfate as a by-product from one of its main chemical processes. They seek better, more feasible methods for recovering and reusing this sodium sulfate.
The client, one of the biggest in the segment, has extensive knowledge in chemical processes, having already tried several technologies or processes (multiple effect evaporation, nanofiltration, reverse osmosis, electrodialysis). None of these proved economically feasible as a standalone solution.
Possible approaches might, but are not limited to:
-Any new process or technology that meets stated requirements and constraints
-Process that recovers sodium sulfate at high purity
-Process that transforms sodium sulfate into other components in aqueous phase
-Process that removes the sulfate, recovering other components
-Synergistic combinations of technology.
Technical Specifications / Specific technical requirements of the request
The successful technology will:
-Recover or remove sodium sulfates from an aqueous flow containing about 5% sodium sulfate
-Be energetically and economically feasible
There may be some heat available for new process
-Be environmentally sound
Not create any toxic or unsafe byproducts.

Further Information (Technical Details Concerning the Profile)
The respondent should start by submitting a written response briefly describing the technical approach and providing information on technology performance, background, and description of the responding team and its related experience. The response will be evaluated according to the following criteria: - Overall scientific and technical merit of the proposed approach. - Approach to proof of concept and performance. - Potential for proprietary position (i.e. novel or protectable technology). - Economic potential of the concept. - The respondent’s capabilities and related experience. - Realism of the proposed plan and cost estimates. Some items that will be especially important to include: •High level description of proposed technology, including, if available: Intended treatment process for sulfated water Water project objectives and ability Technology maturity (concept, preliminary trials, ready to commercialize, commercialized) Probability of success and potential barriers of development in existing process with characteristics Economic feasibility estimate including rationale adopted Market impact of recovered material, if known Environmental impact of proposed approach Physical and chemical characterization of obtained product (if applicable) •Team description including relevant assets and capabilities •Willingness to work with third parties to maximize synergy and co-funding •Intellectual property position List of relevant patents, if available •Desired relationship with sponsor.
Collaboration Type
* License Agreement
* Joint further development
* Adaptation to specific needs
Comments
Responses from companies (large or small, startups, etc.), hospital or academic researchers, contract research institutes, pharmacologists, nutritionists, medicinal chemists, drug formulators, biochemists, physiologists, alternative or traditional medicine providers, etc., from around the world are all welcome.
ANTICIPATED PROJECT PHASES OR PROJECT PLAN
Phase 1 – proof of concept:
Demonstrate process to treat sulfated water, including economic assessment and pathway to industrial scale
Phase 2 – scaling application:
Technology optimization, pilot scale testing, and full deployment into existing manufacturing process and unit.
Criteria for moving from Phase 1 to Phase 2
Client will consider for advancement a program that makes adequate progress toward technical and economically feasibility with acceptable return on investment.
