Taking blood from arteries can be crucial in diagnosing problems in health emergencies - but doing so in the microgravity of space is difficult and potentially dangerous. A UK SME has developed a device to overcome the problems that selects samples from the earlobe. The earlobe was chosen because it is close to the arterial blood supply, has no muscle groupings and is readilly accessible and the blood obtained serves as an accurate substitute for arterial blood. Trials in microgravity conditions have been successful with, importantly, no after bleeding recorded. Further development and testing is required to ensure that the device will operate in a full space environment and to produce a portable blood analyser. The reasoning being that if the device is operably in the extreme conditions of space, then it can easily be transferred for use in terestrial accident and disaster conditions. The company seeks an industrial partner or partners to contribute to the technical and financial challenges for this next stage and exploit the potential earth bound markets (disaster and emergency medical aid).
