Description:
Antibodies are a very large family of proteins, which are produced by the immune system in response to the presence of foreign objects like bacteria and viruses. Functionally they are characterised by their ability to bind to their antigens with high specificity and affinity. They are widely used by biological researchers and are finding applications in diagnostics and imaging, and in drug discovery research for both screening and validation of targets.
In such research, the study of the structure and function of proteins requires the use of both chemical and physical methods to detect proteins. Physical methods are mostly applied after chromatography using techniques such as light absorption spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. Chemical methods are typically used after 2D electrophoresis and employ staining with dyes, chelates, complexing with silver, or pre-labelling with fluorophores. Such methods have a number of common drawbacks. Most are not very fast, can be expensive, don't offer the required sensitivity, have high background levels of noise and are not always easy to handle. Since protein detection can be a powerful tool for diagnosing, prognosing, and monitoring many medical conditions, researchers are seeking new detection platforms that can detect specific molecules from complex mixtures often in a multiplex format. Ideally detection would be rapid, selective, sensitive and simple to perform.
Technical Specifications / Specific technical requirements of the request
The UK company has established international sales channels that delivers research reagents etc to the global academic research community. They are now seeking to introduce a new range of complementary products aimed at protein detection. Samples will be commonly used analytes such as blood, urine, saliva, cell culture media, swabs, environmental samples etc. They are looking for proven technologies/systems with the following attributes compared to current industry standard solutions:
1. Improved sensitivity - technologies that deliver >10-fold improvement (e.g. more signal from the same number of binding events
2. Minimal background noise (clean signal)
3. Fast - less than 30 mins
4. Small sample volume - 1 - 10 micro-litres max
Technologies of interest will deliver one or more of the above attributes. They will also be relatively low cost to establish €1000 (NOT expensive electronic boxes), and/or be readily adaptable to existing laboratory detection systems (e.g. plate readers, fluorometers).
Finally they will be either ready for market or on the market. R&D projects will NOT be considered.
The UK company believes that some existing POC devices that can be used to target a broad range of analytes (NOT one specific) may be adaptable to the laboratory market.

Comments
The company is looking for commercial and academic partners with market ready/already on market protein detection technologies/systems that meet the specified requirements. Existing Point-of-care systems that can detect a broad range of common analytes are of particular interest. A range of partnering arrangements is possible depending on mutual interests. These would include:
In the first instance prospective partners are asked to provide an outline of their protein detection system, state of development, range of analytes etc, market presence, unique features etc, plus what can be demonstrated/tested with existing test data.
