Description:
A manufacturer of industrial filters based in the South-East of England is looking for novel materials and/or technologies to extend their portfolio and decrease the costs and environmental impact of their production process. The company is interested in novel materials that can be used as binders for borosilicate fibres in their products. Specifically, their interest extends to two areas:
1) finding water-based alternatives for currently used materials, which use large amounts of organic solvents;
2) finding polytetrafluoro ethylene (PTFE) based materials that can be used as binders, to extend their portfolio.
The company is looking for academic partners in the fields of chemistry or materials science to jointly develop the novel materials. Preferentially, the company is looking for a short-term interaction, such as consultancy or a short industrial placement. Academic or industrial partners with mature technology available for licensing opportunities are also welcomed.
Technical Specifications / Specific technical requirements of the request
The company currently uses two binders, which they would like to replace with water based items. The first is a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) powder, which is turned into a paste by mixing it with diisobutylketone (DIBK) and dimethoxypropane (DMP) and thinned down with methyl ether ketone (MEK) to make the solution suitable for dipping. The second is silica which is bought as a liquid containing butanol and xylene and diluted with MEK to make it suitable for dipping. To decrease the environmental impact of the process, the company is looking for water-based materials that show the same performance as the currently used materials.
The water based binder material should show the following properties:
The company is also looking for binder materials that are based on PTFE-based materials. These materials should be compatible with existing process conditions (i.e. dipping in an MEK-solution) or with the novel, water based processing conditions.
Current and Potential Domain of Application
The technology will primarily be used for the manufacturing of industrial filters, but may be applied more generally to the coating of glass objects.
