Biological and solid-state nanopores are an exciting field of research which has seen rapid development over the last 10 to 20 years. Activities in this area range from theoretical and experimental work on the underlying (bio)physics to applications in biosensing and DNA sequencing. While the prospect of DNA sequencing continues to be one of the major scientific and commercial driving forces, there are numerous other applications with potentially similar impact. These have just begun to emerge and are being explored by dozens of research groups around the world.
