EMBO 2010 Molecular Medicine Workshop - Cell guidance signals in cancer

Camogli-Portofino Vetta, Italy (May 06-09, 2010)

The workshop will focus on the role of guidance molecules (such as ephrins, semaphorins, netrins, etc.) in different functional contexts related to cancer. For instance, some of these signals are thought to regulate tumor cell growth and survival, cell fate and differentiation, migration, invasion and metastatic dissemination. Moreover they were found to control tumor angiogenesis and the function of other stromal cells in the tumor microenvironment.

In recent years, a growing body of evidence has indicated that signalling molecules previously implicated in developmental axon and cell guidance (such as ephrins, semaphorins, netrins, and others) are also important regulators of tumour growth, angiogenesis, and metastatic progression. Moreover, the literature on the role of guidance molecules in cancer is growing rapidly and indicates an intriguing similarity in functional paradigms and signaling pathways exploited by these different families of molecules.
