The main activity of the Division of Agroecology is to gather basic data to restructure crop production, and to determine the optimal composition of field crops in both productive and marginal. The aim is to optimize the systems to grow conventional crops and also those for further industrial processing. Special attention is paid to develop programs that model crop yields. Research is focused on the protection and technology of soil tillage, and on the possible use of growth regulators to fully utilize the potential of a crop. Weed communities are monitored in different farming systems to determine the impact of long- and short-term variations in weed communities. The causes of population explosions of weed species are studied, as are the resistance to herbicides, and the introduction of weeds from neighbouring countries. Particular emphasis is put on towic pollutants, their monitoring and transport in the environment. The storage of wastes and ensuing recultivation of damaged areas are systematically studied. The division´s network of experimental stations in the Czech Republic carries out experiments for scientists from other divisions of the Institute, and from other research and non-research organisations. |
