Diversity of underutilised cereals and pseudocereals and its use in sustainable agriculture and in healthy food production

Project:  Diversity of underutilised cereals and pseudocereals and its use in sustainable agriculture and in healthy food production

Research institute: Agricultural Research Institute Kromeriz, LtD.

Description:
Annotation: The aim of the submitted project is to extend diversity of cultivated crops and to recommend their suitable utilization. The project is aimed at two groups of cereals and pseudocereals: The crops that are grown in a small (or only in minimal) extend, but their utilization in food industry is insufficient (buckwheat, millet, spelt, emmer and naked oat). The growing systems of these crops in organic or conventional agriculture are solved. For these crops the main attention will be paid to searching of their specific traits use in products attractive for consumers with an accompanied economic effect for growers. Next group includes crops not grown yet (einkorn, naked barley, semi-perennial ray and foxtail millet). Especially for these crops the project solves problems of gathering and evaluation of available GR, selection of promising genotypes and their detail study. The crops will be tested in various growing conditions with subsequent elaboration of growing methods in particular regions of Czech Republic include searching and testing of processing possibilities and using of products. Important agronomical and morphological characters and phonological phases will be evaluated. Selected genotypes will be tested for resistance to abiotic stresses. A high attention is paid to evaluation of nutritional quality and to use of a high quality of germinated seeds for healthy food production. For some species, technology of base processing (where missing), dietary product recipes, and attractive products for usual and immodest customers will be proposed. The most traditional crops/genotypes will be chosen for ‘on farm’ conservation.
